To create a root password on the Steam Deck, follow these simple steps:

  1. Hold down on the power button.
  2. Scroll down to Switch to Desktop. Press the A button and wait for the desktop to load.
  3. Once in Desktop Mode, click on the Steam icon (bottom left) and just start typing “settings”, you will see “System Setting appear at the top. Click it.
  4. When the System Setting box appears, scroll the left menu until you see Users.
  5. You will see the following:
Setting sudo password on Steam Deck
  6. Click on Change Password. When the “Change Password” box appears, type in the password you want to set as your Root Password.

    DO NOT FORGET THIS PASSWORD!!

Note: After you create the password and are prompted to type it in at a later time, you will not see any indication of it being typed, but you are, in fact, typing. Just enter the password you created and press Enter.

You’re all set. Now you have a Root Password on your Steam Deck.

Hope this helped. Cheers!
